Central Processor Fan
Better known as C.P.U. cooling fan |
|
As a computer tech this is one of the most common
computer system failure causes. A dirty Central Processor Fan and Heat
Sink. This is a normal system maintenance procedure that should be done
at least once every six (6) months to all systems.
|
|
And yes this was a customers
computer.
May I mention there house was spotless. |

Your C.P.U. (Central Processing unit)
heats up to extremely high temperatures. The Heat-Sink is attached to
the C.P.U. using a heat transfer compound to transfer the heat to the
Heat-Sink. The fan blows cool air onto the Heat-Sink to keep the C.P.U.
cool and within operating temperatures.
|

Dirty C.P.U. Fan |
When a fan gets plugged with dirt it can no
longer cool the Heat-Sink and therefore the C.P.U. overheats and causes
a thermal shutdown of the system. If you keep trying to start the system
while overheated and in thermal protection you risk greater damage to
your system like hard drive damage, C.P.U. damage and in some events the
dust can ignite causing a fire. Yes C.P.U.'s get that hot!
|

Note thickness of dirt
|
You can tell a thermal issue exist if you start
your computer and it runs fine for a few minutes or even an hour then
shuts off on you without any reason you are aware of. When you try to
restart it the system again shuts down but in less time as the C.P.U. is
already in an overheated state.

Dirt packs into heat sink
|
| Other problems caused by dust and dirt are from a
buildup collecting moisture and causing a electrical connection that
shorts out your memory and or mainboard. As seen in this picture the
buildup has covered the memory modules socket. |
